These four cover almost every household arrangement in the metro. Most homeowners here buy the first one on a flat seasonal price, add the second if they are inside a city, and discover the third or fourth only after something goes wrong.
The core product in this market and the one with a published price attached to it. A standard drive up to a hundred feet, a two-inch trigger, mid-November to the first of April. What pushes a quote past the published range is length, grade and where the snow is supposed to go by February.
Grand Rapids allows 24 hours after the snow stops. Grand Haven Charter Township allows 12, with a fine of not less than $50 behind it. In a township, no public plow is coming for your walk at any point in the winter, and the road commission says so in writing.
Not a surcharge item — a setup item. The blade comes up about half an inch, or shoes go on so it floats over the stone. An operator who skips that step moves a layer of your driveway into the lawn on the first pass of the season.
Rock salt has a floor around 15 °F and this metro spends real mornings underneath it. Two local cities have already rewritten their own salting practice around that, one of them by not salting sidewalks at all.
The reason to move on this is water finding its way into a wall or down into a basement, not a roof giving way. Michigan’s own insurance regulator describes ice damming as meltwater spreading under the shingles, and the building code carries a heavier design snow load over most of the Ottawa side than over most of Kent.
Worked out on the federal event counts rather than on a sales argument. An average winter here produces about 23 or 24 days over an inch and about 8 over three inches. Where your trigger sits between those two numbers is the whole decision.

This is the split that decides the shape of a West Michigan snow contract, and it is invisible from the mailing address. Inside a city — Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Wyoming, Walker, Grandville, Hudsonville, Rockford, Lowell — the city plows the street and the city sets a sidewalk deadline you can be fined against. In a township — Ada, Cascade, Georgetown, Plainfield, Byron, Caledonia, Allendale — the roads belong to a county road commission and the sidewalks belong to nobody but you.
The Kent County Road Commission states it without hedging: it does not clear sidewalks or non-motorized paths. Its target is one full pass on every county road within 36 hours of a storm ending, in a fixed priority order that puts subdivision streets and gravel roads at the back, and it does not take off-schedule requests except from police and fire. The Ottawa County side runs the same model.
So a township household usually needs the driveway handled and the walk handled by the same visit, because there is no public backstop for either. A city household often needs the driveway plus a return pass timed against the municipal plow. Look up your own town before you compare two quotes.
Town, driveway length, paved or gravel, whether it runs downhill to the garage, and what else needs clearing. That is enough to match you with an operator who already runs the route.
